27 พ.ค. นพ.มานิต ธีระตันติกานนท์ อธิบดีกรมควบคุมโรค เปิดเผยสถานการณ์โรควัณโรคของไทย ว่ายังเป็นปัญหา และประเทศไทยติดอันดับที่ 18 ใน 22 ของกลุ่มประเทศที่มีปัญหาวัณโรครุนแรง โดยองค์การอนามัยโลกประมาณการณ์ว่าไทยมีผู้ป่วยทั้งสิ้น 110,129 ราย ข้อมูลในปี 2552 ระบุว่า มีผู้ป่วยรายใหม่ปีละ 92,087 ราย เป็นวัณโรคปอดเสมหะพบเชื้อ 40,000 ราย เสียชีวิตปีละ 12,890 ราย ขณะที่อัตราความสำเร็จในการรักษามีเพียงร้อยละ 83 ซึ่งต่ำกว่ามาตรฐานที่องค์การอนามัยโลกกำหนดไว้คือร้อยละ 85 เล็กน้อย

เนื่องจากไทยมีอัตราการเสียชีวิตสูงถึงร้อยละ 8 และอัตราขาดการรักษาร้อยละ 6 ประชาชนทั่วไปรับทราบข้อมูลด้านวัณโรคยังไม่ทั่วถึง รวมถึงการนำเสนอโรควัณโรคสู่สาธารณชนยังคงมีอยู่อย่างจำกัด จึงจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องมีการรณรงค์ให้ประชาชนได้รับทราบข้อมูลอย่างทั่วถึง กรมควบคุมโรคจึงได้ร่วมมือกับมูลนิธิรักษ์ไทย จัดโครงการประกวดหนังสั้น ( Short Film Competition Project 2 ) หัวข้อ “เร่งรัด สร้างสรรค์ ร่วมใจ หยุดยั้งภัยวัณโรค” ชิงถ้วยพระราชทาน สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี โดยผู้สมัครต้องเป็นนิสิต นักศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษา อายุไม่เกิน 25 ปี สมัครเป็นทีมๆ ละไม่เกิน 5 คน ส่งผลงานหนังสั้นในรูปแบบ DVD ความยาวไม่เกิน 10 นาที มีเนื้อหานำเสนอแง่มุมเชิงบวกเกี่ยวกับผู้ป่วยวัณโรค, สถานการณ์ปัญหา, ความเข้าใจเรื่องวัณโรค, อาการ, การติดต่อ, การรักษา และการป้องกัน
